EFR: Learning CPR and First Aid the easy way!
First of all the Emergency First Response (EFR) Primary / Secondary Care course starts with you reading the Primary / Secondary Care manual. There is also an excellent DVD to watch and the EFR Knowledge Reviews to complete prior to the start of the course. Your EFR Instructor will also go through these with you at the start of class. Something we found over the years that we have been teaching EFR, is that many people have had an experience with something in the student manual. Consequently, there are usually some topics people want to learn a little bit more about. Because this may be you, please also make notes of any questions which spring to mind while you are studying.
Once you are happy with your home study we move onto the “Hands on” Skills Practical Application, which is where you will learn how to do the skills.
There are 9 Primary Care skills and in addition 4 Secondary Care Skills that you will also be taught. There is also the option of learning how to use an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) which is becoming especially relevant.
Please note: we always the teach The Optional Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) Skill because these are becoming more common and therefore more important globally.
The Skills you are going to learn are as follows:

- Barrier Use - Primary Care Skill 2

- CPR Chest Compressions - Primary Care Skill 4
- CPR Chest Compressions Combined With Rescue Breathing - Primary Care Skill 5
- Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Use - Optional Primary Care Skill

CPR / First Aid: Skill Practice
The Skill Practice is run in a very straight forward and therefore easy to follow way. First of all your EFR Instructor will demonstrate Primary Care Skill 1. This is done in a nice slow relaxed manner rather than being intense and rushed. If you would like your Instructor to repeat it, no problem, just ask. We can repeat things as many times as you wish. Once the Instructor Demonstration is completed you will consequently then practice the skills with your fellow students. The instructional system assures mastery, giving you plenty of time to ask questions and also repeat any skills you or your Instructor would like.
In your groups of 3 one of you will be the Victim, one the Rescuer and one of you the Coach. The Coach reads out the steps one at a time from the EFR Student manual. After each step is read out the Rescuer completes the step until the skill is complete. Once you are happy with the skill and your EFR Instructor is happy with the skill, then you switch roles. Therefore the next person becomes the Rescuer, the next person becomes the Coach and so on. As a result you will have repeated the skills at least 3 times at this point.
When the initial CPR / First Aid Skills have been mastered your Instructor will then take you through a number of "Scenarios." Because the idea is to put you in "Simulated Emergency Situations" to see what you would do. This is one of the best ways for you to practice and therefore apply the knowledge and skills you have learned during the course. We keep this realistic and focused while also having some fun at the same time.
CPR / First Aid: Equipment
On our EFR courses we use Adult, Child and Infant Leardal mannequins. In addition we use CPR / First kits for the best possible simulation and scenario practice. As mentioned: we also teach the Optional AED skill. This is done with AED Training Units with realistic AED simulators.
