- Reporting Data
On your Indepth PADI Fish Identification Course you get to learn about how to classify different fish by Fish Family Groupings. This is in addition to the common characteristics of different fish. These will be fish typically found in the Andaman Sea around Phuket. Once you have completed your course you should be able to classify different fish. And in turn, understand how you can turn your observations of reef fish into valid data for use by scientists.
What are Common Characteristics of Fish?
An example of "Common Characteristics" would be say Butterfly fish, Angelfish and Surgeonfish. These fish usually have thin bodies and are oval or disk shaped. In addition, these fish generally have bright colours and interesting patterns that add to the beauty of the coral reef areas they typically inhabit. You will learn on your curse that Butterfly Fish are usually are round, small bodied and have concave foreheads. Also, many Butterfly Fish also have elongated mouths, that allow them to pick out tiny invertebrates from crevices.
Common names include: Banded, Foureye, Spotfin, Racoon, Lemon
Now, as you will learn on your PADI Fish ID Course, Angelfish are by contrast, usually darker in colour. And have longer dorsal fins and have rounded foreheads. As such, Angel Fish are one of the few fish that eat sponges.
Common names: Queen, Blue, French, Gray, Rock Beauty, Flame, Emperor and Royal.
On your Fish ID dives you will identify fish by placing them in appropriate family groups. Additionally, during your course dives, you will also identify the specific species. All this data you record on a slate, including abundance and habitat information. When possible drawing diagrams, or even better taking photos, helps massively. Especially after the dive when you try to describe the characteristics of an unfamiliar fish. Thus the techniques you will learn can help you to attempt to determine their identities after the dive.
For your PADI Fish Identification Course: Fish slates, blank slates and Digital Underwater Cameras are all excellent tools for these activities ...
Now you have completed your PADI Fish ID course, what did you learn?
So, during your PADI Fish ID Course you have been learning how to recognise different Fish families, groups, classes. This was as well as learning how to record valuable data for research purposes. Therefore, hopefully, you will now be comfortable with this and you will no doubt be curious to learn more. Once you have finished this course, why not learn about the different types of coral by looking at the AWARE Coral Reef Conservationist course? And additionally, as you have studied fish survey techniques, after your Fish ID Course you might also want to work on a conservation project ?

These are environments like Wrecks, diving in currents (Drift Diving) where you will find all kinds of different marine life to identify!
